Inspired
by the heroine of the ballet "Don Quixote" (Quitarea in the
original), whose traditional costume is a marvelous red
Spanish tutu with black lace ornaments, and whose big
variation is a flirtatious little number with a
fan.
Kitri's Mantilla is the inevitable descendant of the Kitri Sock. From the moment I first drew that sketch I knew it was destined someday to become a big sweeping shawl... and now it has. Row upon row of fans within a fan; fagotted sticks gathered to a central point; deep decadent beading dripping from the edges. Wear it as a wrap; drape it over a comb; gather it fanlike or spread it out to its full rectangle. You decide.
