FIREBIRD
NOTES AND ERRATA

Thanks to Mairead and Woolforbrains for catching this one right out of the starting gate.

In R3 of the toe instructions there is a missing yo. It comes immediately after the s1-s1-k1-p2sso. The chart is correct.

My apologies.

For now I’m making this a locked/sticky thread. If there’s a lot of this sort of thing (cringe) maybe I’ll make a page instead.

Mairead caught this one - thanks!

Correction to Row 25 of the Tapered Tail-Feathers Section:

In the instructions (p. 6), omit the second yo.

In the chart, omit both the second and the third yos.

The corrected row should read:

R25: k13, m1, k1, yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, k1, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1, m1, k13

Thanks, Woolforbrains, for nabbing these two.

Instructions for body of the bird, R4, p. 8, should read:

R4: m1, k to E, s1, wp4, k1-b, k3, k1-b, wp4, s1, k to eon, m1

Also, there’s an obsolete version of Row 17 inserted between Rows 15 and 16 on p. 9. The Row 17 that comes AFTER Row 16 is the correct one; ignore the other.

FaithEllen reported this one. Thanks!

It’s not an error in the Firebird pattern, it’s a misprint in the Techniques booklet. I’m including it among the Firebird errata because the corrections will be included with the Firebird corrections I’m planning to send out with the next kit.

On p. 3 of the Toe-Shaping Increases section, the last paragraph is truncated. You’re missing two words:

     the sock.

Score another hit for Mairead.

It’s another Techniques booklet misprint: some copies are missing p. 2 of Twisted Stitches.

Here is what should be on it:

Left Slip Twist (LST)
Work like LT-b but slip the upper stitch tbl instead of working it

Right Slip Twist (RST)
Work like RT-b but slip the upper stitch tbl instead of working it

NOT an error, omission or correction, but Mairead has posted some very useful notes on her experience knitting the sock - well worth reading. See this thread: My Firebird.

(My thanks to Mairead for her permission to quote the following!)

So, now that I’m almost finished my first one, I thought I’d share some thoughts. YMMV, so feel free to disagree.

* First of all, RELAX. It’s a complex pattern but it’s well written and there’s lots of help available so shout if you get stuck. There are a few minor errors and omissions but tsocktsarina has listed all the fixes in the errata thread. That said, you do need to keep your wits about you.
* I’m not sure wooden needles are a great idea with so many twisty bits, but that’s an individual choice. The techniques booklet has a neat low-torque k3tog
* Count your stitches often, particularly if there’s shaping in progress. It will save much tinking, not to mention swearing. Ask me how I know this ;-)
* Lifelines are also worth considering, partiularly near and at the end of the tail feather section (R17-24 repeats) in case you need to go back and adjust the length of the foot.
* The plaited basket stitch looks fantastic, but the words ‘there is no denying that it is somewhat inelastic’ are not in the pattern notes for no reason. If, like me, you have a high instep and/or are doing the medium size, you may find it makes the sock just a bit too tight. Sadly, you may not know for sure until after you have turned the heel. On the plus side, seed stitch is a lot less labour-intensive and still looks pretty.
* I think it would be a good idea to take a pencil and lightly draw a stitch grid on the bird chart, so you can keep track of how many stitches are supposed to be between the E’s. I ended up with one more stitch on one side than the other, which I had to fudge at the head.
* On the subject of ‘owning your knitting’, the pattern is not gospel so if you find a suggested technique doesn’t suit you, it’s ok to use one you prefer as long as it gives the desired result. For example, I completely failed with the twists as described, so I used a cable needle. As long as you are consistent and use the same variation throughout, all will be well.

Happy Knitting!

For Large Size only. You can thank dpalme for catching this discrepancy, even though she’s not knitting the large size herself.

The instructions for the Row 11 of the toe (p.4) do not match the chart. The instructions are correct.

Actually, it doesn’t really matter which you follow - either will look fine, and neither will screw up your stitch count or anything like that. But if you follow the instructions, as opposed to the chart, you will get a tiny of extra definition of the feather tip at that point.

Again, not an error, but ann1knit has posted some useful notes on working the Russian Loop; see this post.

(My thanks to ann1knit for her permission to quote the following!)

Here’s my version/splanation of the first Russian Loopey stitches:

Right Edge Russion Loopeys:

Knit to E-2 (2 sts before the E stitch)
Slip 2 sts from Left Needle to Right Needle
K 1 thru back loop, drag this stitch down in front of the work as a loop, or place on a cable needle
Slip the 2 sts back from Right Needle to Left Needle
Place the dragged down stitch loop onto the Left Needle (adjust the tension and length as per the Tsarina’s notes in the techniques booklet)
K1 thru back loop of the stitch you just put onto the Left Needle, and again drop or drag this stitch down in front of the work
Slip 2 sts from Right Needle to Left Needle (these stitches have been knit already)
Put the newly dragged down stitch loop onto the Right Needle
Slip 2 sts from Left Needle to Right Needle
Adjust the tension and length of the loop
The 2 sts that were first slipped are now still sitting on the Left Needle
Knit those 2 sts

After resting to recover your knitting equanimity…

Knit the body(s) and center sts as already established to the Left most E st

Left Edge Russian Loopeys

K1 thru back loop, drag this stitch down in front of the work as a loop like before
K2 sts
Place the dragged down st onto the Left Needle and adjust length and tension
K1 thru back loop of the st you just placed back onto the Left Needle
Drop this st again down in front of your work
K2 sts
Place the dragged down st onto the Right Needle and adjust length and tension
K to eor

Again take another rest to recover your knitting equanimity…

By the way, it only took me about 5 frogging sessions and 1 episode of CSI: NY to work this version and explanation out for myself. Having passed these lovely Russian Loopeys, I am currently on R50 of the body charts (W00T!!) and hoping to reach the top of the head tonight!

PetYarn caught this error in last line of short-row heel instructions, p. 10: now reads “Turn work and k38(42)” - should read “Turn work and k37(41).”
