Love Is Blue
Blue, blue, my sock is blue….
Bluestocking: n. A derisive term originally applied to a group of 18th-century women with literary/intellectual interests. Later informally broadened to include women with a political or social agenda, women with ambitions beyond their traditional station. Uppity women. Proto-feminists, as it were.
Blue Stocking: n. A sexy, saucy, slightly silly sock with a more than passing resemblance to the fishnet stockings of yesteryear; a tribute to Knitters’ Suffrage and the Power of Knitters. To women who Own Their Knitting. To Knitters Who Represent.
And here she is.

Are My Seams Straight…?”
BTW, the delaying factor the other night was caused by my imbecile passion for wordplay. You see, I knew I wanted the cuff to evoke the feeling of a garter… and so, being me, I bethought me that it would be AWFULLY cute to make a garter out of - garter stitch. So I set out to do that. I won’t say it didn’t work. I think it did, pretty much. It was an awful lot of work, though - set perpendicular to the sock, with a lot of picking up and slipping and binding off and casting on. Should have been a wake-up call to me, considering that I set out to make a fairly simple sock. In the event, though, that wouldn’t have mattered to me so much if it hadn’t turned out so, well, UGLY. Complicated would have been OK, but ugly was the deal-breaker.

See what I mean? Even with a ribbon (admittedly the wrong color, which doesn’t help)… nope, not worth it even for the sake of a joke.
And now… off to write it up. Stay tuned for the pattern.

It’s perfect. I love the seam up the back. But for the obtuse among us (that would be present company), I’m glad you included the definition of bluestocking. It went right over my head previously.
_The Nine Tailors_ is very engaging. I have the feeling that I’m going to be messing around on the piano soon to figure out what this stuff sounds like since I already know what it “looks” like.

A propos Bob Major Doubles:

for a news item on Norman Yeo, who has just celebrated his 100th birthday by ringing a peal at his local church.

LOVE the seams up the back. Say, if you have a design for homemade fishnet stockings, my husband would probably buy me yarn every day. LOL

Hey Beth in WI!! Can you picture these in the Crimson Rioja Red from Kitri? Sexy! Hey Lisa! Show us what that would look like courtesy of PhotoShop.

These turned out so, so lovely. No, I take that back, they are meant to be strong and resilient socks right?

Gorgeous! And is the color Alice Blue, as favored by Alice Roosevelt Longworth? An uppity woman, if there ever was one.

That is absolutely magnificent, and I so desperately want to knit myself a pair! I don’t think they’re ugly at all!

I’ve always preferred the term bas bleu; bluestocking sounds like it could be the colloquial name for some type of songbird.

Absolutly awesome sock. I would love to have the finished pattern since I don’t quite have the skills needed to wing-it with the beta version.
Glad I found your site.

I love this hopelessly. You are determined to destroy my sock resistance, are you not?
(Lovely to see you last night - hope you had a VERY successful evening. Looked promising…)

I am just hoping I will remember your URL so I can remember to return for the Bluestocking pattern. I am fascinated by socks … and stockings … even if I don’t seem to knit them on a regular basis.
Happy knitting.
P.S. I think your garter cuff is cute!

OK. I read a bit further along and found the PDF notation for the stockings- and which I have now put in a very safe place. (I still like your original garter cuff better.)
Happy knitting and thank you,
Janey
